| Krumm, Hunt, and Moder first played in a band together in grade school. Krumm and Moder played "Stray Cat Strut" at a talent show when they were in 5th grade.
Hunt, Krumm, and Moder played their first gig at Maryville West Elementary School in Maryville, Illinois. It was their 6th grade graduation party and Moder's mom, Carol, sat in on piano for a few songs.
Hunt, Krumm, and Moder played in a number of bands throughout grade school, junior high school, and high school. Some of the band names included Torcher, Extortion, Exodus, Norwegian Blue, and Straight Curves.
Hunt and Krumm formed The Suede Chain in Champaign, Illinois, in 1989 with Matt and Jason Docter. Moder went to Boston's Berklee College of Music in 1990.

Former drummer Mike Rader read a review of a band that "sounds like Big Black meets The Great Crusades, if that was actually a band." Mike heard that and thought that might be a good name for a band.

Whenever Moder moved to Chicago from Los Angeles, his drum kit had not arrived and the band only had a partial drumkit for him to use with no drum stool. So he rehearsed a few times without it and found that he really liked it. When his kit arrived, he decided not to use the seat.
